What would you do if you encountered a beggar on the street? Especially if he is an old man or a very young handicapped kid. We do have the means to help, but where would you draw the line? Whether the beggar is above 70?, or the kid is severely handicapped? What if the handicap were fake? We cant determine. Maybe we should just ignore all of them, since some kind soul is gonna give them money anyway, no point in doing so.
The dilemma arises because we all somewhat feel that we have an obligation to give away some of our hard-earned (if you did) money for charitable reasons. It is this "obligation" which makes us feel bad when we do not give, or uneasy when we do.
In this world, we can choose to share, to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. That is where we find meaning in our lives, the satisfaction that we have let that beggar eat for a day, that our relatives can buy a flat to live in because of us. We share because we are
happy to do so.
You should feel happy and proud that you can share with someone in need, even if not satisfying all his needs. Give money to the beggar if it makes you happy. Any amount would do. It is not a function of their needs or whether they're faking blindness, but is a function of your well-being. If your wallet is heavy with coins and is uncomfortable, giving them to a beggar makes you happy. Give the optimum amount that will not cause you to feel uneasy, or bad, but make you happier than the beggar.
It is only when we adopt this spirit that we can start to gradually shift to sharing culture - the happiness of sharing. We would be proud to be able to share with others, rather than doing so because we feel obliged.
